With a smile and a tip of the hat
One thing I like about pop songs is their witty ways of reffering to other pop songs (or bands): for example, Tallulah Gosh sing a song about '(The day she lost her) Pastels Badge'. Now that's enough to make me smile, but it goes further than this, because there is also a band called The Dear Diaries singing a song called 'Funday Mornings Badge' - thus reffering to Funday Mornings and Tallulah Gosh at the same time... how cool is that?
Well okay maybe it's only cool if you're as easily impressed as I am. But it's a good way to be.
It means you can spend a quarter of a day smiling at the fact that Stuart Murdoch sings "you'll settle for an epitaph like 'Walk away Renee'", thus reffering to the Left Banke, and how great that is because, remember, last November when you where waiting for Nick by a fountain you listened to 'Pretty Ballerina' and thought how great it would be if Belle and Sebastian covered it and wondered if this would ever happen, and whether they've heard the song or not, and now you know they do...
