There are few things quite so unsettling as that moment when one realizes one has turned into one's older friends. It usually comes in the middle of complaining about petty things, on some blindly grey Wednesday afternoon. You know the feeling, where you stop for a second, and think with surprise that all the older kids you used to hang out with have moved somewhere else, married, died, turned gay, divorced . . had multiple kids ( not necessarily in that order ). . . What's more, those kids are the same age as you were when you met your older friends. On the tail of this, you realize that all your friends now are just a little younger than you, and they are the ones calling you up to go out all the time. They are the ones that have to be distracted with colorful annoying excuses like, " I'm so busy these days," (when what you actually may be doing is lying in bed with your shades drawn on a Sunday afternoon)
So you are the oldest of the group now, somewhere between 'cool and most in demand' and loserhood status. I never thought I would get there, especially not at this tender age, but it blindsided me on a grey Wednesday afternoon, somewhere between hurling quoits and riding a Harley on the back roads through the blueberry fields and cranberry bogs of New Jersey.
