Daydreams of a friend

Today is sunny, and hence, odd. Not odd in the sense of strange or unusual, or even interesting (yet), but for the whole week, every second day has been sunny, making delightful intervals in the delightful rain. Yesterday was rainy, and hence toady is odd, or perhaps even (even). But we are not quite condemned to discussing the weather yet, thank Go... odness.

No, since Liezl is leaving again tomorrow, she is on my mind a bit, and that's not a bad thing by a long chalk, no sir it isn't. Liezl is my best friend, and one of the few girls that I can shop with. yes, we're THAT good friends. And so tomorrow she is leaving again, which is a sortof mix between a good and a bad thing. A bad thing for me, because I will miss her terribly, but a good thing for her, because she's going back to her boyfriend up north. Liezl is one of those people who managed to hang into a very long-distance relationship for a few years, and then finally gathered up the courage to risk all that and actually go BE with the person. I think the second part is actually more brave and harder than the first, and I respect her immensely for that, as for so many other things.

I've been thinking about this actually, because lately distance has been on my mind. There's this homesick feeling - the kind that inevitably and regrettably lead to bad poetry and terrible songs - for people I've never met in countries I've never been to. And of course a lot of energy goes into thinking how it would be, actually meeting all these people, what they would be like, what we would do and talk about. Imagination is such an easy thing. But what would happen if it ever came to pass that I COULD see them, try to do all these things, meanwhile knowing that you'll never do THOSE things at all? What would happen with those hopes and dreams, and would you have the courage to risk the pretty days you've already seen but never had, those precious memories of things that never happened?

In a relationship it must be even worse. So easy to put a good forward on the telephone or in stolen weekends or the odd holiday; so hard to see the irritating little things you only see from day-to-day. And so I say, Liezl, you go girl. Go and get your man. I hope when the time comes I can do as well as you've done. You show me time and again that life is so much sweeter than the dreams you have of it, if you can somehow turn the one into the other. Sometimes, just sometimes, life can be as trite as all that, and it's all good!
