Tomorrow

They took her in today
Problems with her breathing, too much fluid in her system, on her heart, I don't know, I'm not a medical man.

They took her in today
And she was dead to the world when we visited, turned on her side, the smell of blood and excrement, and our tears, our muffled groans, and nothing's ever enough. Nothing.

They took her in today
And I swear that she screamed and hollered that she didn't want to go, but they didn't listen, and as she dug her heels in harder, they hacked off her feet.

They took her in today
And I'm expecting her shadow, the warm carcass in the sun, the smitten youth they never saw, the days capitulated
By someone else's war.
