Isn't the internet exciting?
If it hadn't been for it, I wouldn't be feeling part of something global yesterday.
I would be just feeling like I was in a march in a small, introverted, forsaken-by-everyone-else Balkan city. And it wouldn’t have meant much. Greeks have been anti-American almost forever. They’ve been shouting about it almost forever, too. We shout a lot here. I wouldn’t think that a bit more shouting would make any difference.
Whether or not it had made a difference in the past - and why - is an issue too big to be discussed here. And whether it made a difference this time... well, time will tell.
What made a difference for me though is the thought of Rachel marching down another street in Glasgow, her mum in Dublin, Stefano and Jim in London. Also, the knowledge that a few hours later there would be emails in my inbox (god bless mailing lists - Sinister especially) and posts on blogs (for example, this one with the great photos) about it. And I could sit on my computer and read them, and that would make me feel a part of it more than an article and a photo of a crowd in a newspaper does.
